An interview invitation is exciting — and often comes with very little lead time. Here's a practical, time-efficient way to prepare.
Research the company in 30 minutes. You don't need hours of research, just the essentials: what the company does, who its main clients or markets are, and anything recent in the news about it. If it's a company involved in supplier or enterprise development, understand its sector and what "transformation" or "supplier diversity" means in their context — this shows genuine interest and awareness of South Africa's economic landscape.
Prepare three strong examples from your own experience. Most interview questions, however they're phrased, are trying to assess your skills, your judgement, and how you handle challenges. Prepare three real examples from past jobs, studies, or even volunteer work that demonstrate problem-solving, teamwork, and initiative. Use a simple structure: describe the situation, what you did, and what the result was.
Anticipate the "why" questions. Why this role? Why this company? Why should we hire you? These questions are not formalities — they help employers judge motivation and fit. Have honest, specific answers ready rather than generic praise.
Prepare two or three questions of your own. Asking about growth opportunities, team structure, or what success looks like in the first six months shows you're evaluating the role seriously, not just hoping for any job.
Dress and arrive appropriately. Even for informal workplaces, slightly more formal than the company's everyday dress code is a safe choice. If the interview is virtual, test your internet connection, camera, and microphone beforehand, and choose a quiet, well-lit space.
Follow up. A short thank-you email within 24 hours, reiterating your interest and one key strength, keeps you front of mind and reflects professionalism.
